Only 1,377 of the 1966 GT350s were ever built. AFX is bringing them to you in a special GT350 Series, in many of their color variations - like this stunning Candy Apple Red with White Stripes which was only available on 21.5% of the total cars built.
To understand the significance of the 1966 GT350, you first have to know its predecessor, the ’65. Famously driven by Mark Donohue. Mark was a multi-talented racer and degreed engineer and had amassed a remarkable record of championships, victories, and innovative cars developed across 8 different racing classes. But it was his 1965 race wins and SCCA Divisional Championship in a Shelby GT350R that helped bring him to the attention of a certain Roger Penske. This began a racing partnership that would yield legendary race wins and success for many years. That win also set the spotlight on the GT350Rs, becoming some of the most influential race cars around.
While mechanical changes - such as the dash tach and some performance upgrades distinguished the ’66 from the original ’65, it was the expansion of exterior colors and the nuanced use of racing stripes that most visibly defined the ’66 GT350. And though it wasn’t raced in any tournaments, its power and prestige made it a popular choice for street racing.
Top racing stripes were optional, not standard equipment, so it is entirely correct to see original cars either with or without stripes. We opted for stripes.
